"The first line circle dot paintings appeared
in June 1951. See my book
Creation, p. 78. Fragment of an Endless was painted
a year later in my
studio onboard the Ferryboat Vallejo, moored at
Gate 5, Sausalito.
"At that time I was beginning to discover
the wilds of California: Muir
Woods, the Point Reyes Peninsula, and the high
Sierra, that were for me
places of endless wonder that open the mind to
the spirit of creation.
"Fragment of an Endless is made up of a
ground that alternates between
light and dark areas on which line-circle-dot
calligraphy builds up in
varying tones of colour ending with accents of
black and white.
Circles tend to group themselves together
Lines tend to group themselves together
Dots tend to group themselves together
to express a voyage of discovery in the endless
expanse of inner earth,
inner woods and inner sky that could well continue
in all directions beyond
the borders of the painting.
"At this time I often used to paint over
and over my paintings. It was
more important to me to chase the illusive spirit
of spontaneous inscapes
than it was to make a finished painting. At the
plea of my wife Jacqueline,
this painting was left in its present state. It
has haunted me ever since
and marks an early stage along the way in the
quest of the Inner Worlds."
